Beef tongue for breakfast?! You read that right. Located in the B1 (basement 1) level of the Hakata Station, Tanya (たんや) Hakata specializes in beef tongue. While they serve breakfast, lunch and dinner, their most popular menu item is probably their ¥500 (+tax) breakfast set!
Tanya Hakata – Beef Tongue Breakfast Set
Tanya Hakata’s ¥500 breakfast set comes with 4 slices of beef tongue, sautéed vegetables, rice and soup. You can upgrade your meal with 4 different mini sets:
- Mentaiko set (+ ¥168) – 2 pieces of mentaiko (pollack roe) + your choice of egg (raw) or seaweed
- Okiuto set (+ ¥121) – Okiuto (product made from seaweed) + your choice of egg (raw) or seaweed
- Tororo set (+ ¥93) – grated mountain yam + your choice of egg (raw) or seaweed
- Natto set (+ ¥93) – natto (fermented soy bean) + your choice of egg (raw) or seaweed
My aunt got the Mentaiko Set so her breakfast was ¥668 + tax. That’s still pretty reasonable! Here’s what her meal looked like:
Since I don’t like having a full stomach in the morning, I got the regular breakfast set.
Final Thoughts
While eating beef tongue for breakfast might seem strange, I find it no different than bacon or sausage. Tanya Hakata’s beef tongue breakfast set is a great value, and I highly recommend trying their breakfast if you like beef tongue. You can get a second serving of rice for free. Plus there is a complimentary coffee (self-served) if you need your caffeine fix in the morning.
