Pho and Vegan Cassava Fries from Dundas Eat + Drink – Vancouver

I first heard about Dundas Eat + Drink through Instagram. This modern Asian fusion restaurant is probably best known for their Six O Pho challenge where you can get a massive 5lb pho. Since we’re both light eaters, Mr. Chau and I opted for the standard size noodle soups. We also tried one of their vegan appetizers which I fell in love with!

Here’s a quick video of the food we tried at Dundas Eat + Drink:

Noodle Soups at Dundas Eat + Drink

We were craving noodle soups so both of us got a bowl of noodle soup for lunch. Mr. Chau picked N1 – Pho Sate which has rare beef in a spicy peanut and coconut broth. There’s a generous portion of rare beef which Mr. Chau was very happy about. The spicy peanut and coconut broth have a nice kick to it but we find the heat level to be on the milder side. The broth is not as thick as I had imagined. It’s also lighter and the coconut flavour was more prominent than the peanut.

Since I love tripe and beef meatballs, I got the N7 – Pho Dac Biet. It has rare beef, brisket, beef meatballs and tripe. The meats were great but I do wish the tripe pieces were larger. If you’re someone who likes light yet flavourful dishes like me, you would probably love the broth. Not only is the broth full of flavour, it’s also clean and not greasy. I normally don’t drink the pho broth but I couldn’t resist with this one as it’s so delicious.

Vegan Cassava Fries

First of all, Dundas Eat + Drink have both regular and vegan cassava fries. However, I choose to try the vegan version because I wanted to see how the vegan aioli tasted. And guess what? It’s so delicious you won’t even know that it’s vegan! Plus it’s cheaper than the regular version (at the time of my visit – April 2018). Cassava is a starchy root vegetable, somewhat similar to potatoes but I find it much starchier. So the texture is slightly different than potato fries. Dundas Eat + Drink are cut their cassava root quite large and these chunky fries are a great vehicle for carrying the spicy aioli. Again the heat level is on the milder size so if you shouldn’t have a problem even if you can’t handle really spicy food. I have been raving about these cassava fries and will definitely order them again when I go back.

Both Mr. Chau and I thoroughly enjoyed our meal at Dundas Eat + Drink and would definitely go back if we’re in the East Hastings area. Next time we visit, I’d like to try the Dundas Platter which has a variety of their appetizers and their vegan pho which I heard it’s so good, even meat lovers enjoy it.
